Posted

CLEWISTON -- A semi-truck driver was killed when his vehicle ran into a train on Nov. 28, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred at 2:45 a.m. according to the FHP report.

The semi was traveling east on US 27, west of Flagler Street, approaching a railroad crossing, the FHP report explains.  A train pulling 46 empty locomotive carts was traveling on the railroad tracks. The semi traveled through the crossing gate and collided with the right side of the train.

The train derailed and came to rest blocking the east and west lanes of U.S. 27. The semi became engulfed in flames and came to rest on the shoulder of the road.

The semi-truck driver, a 37-year-old Opa Locka man, was pronounced deceased on scene. There were no passengers in the semi. No occupants were injured on train.

Heavy fog was reported in the area of the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
