Tigers hang on to win thriller over Key West

CLEWISTON- It didn’t take long for Andrew Powell to get his first win as the new head coach of the Clewiston High School varsity football program. And it couldn't have been any more dramatic.

The Tigers held on to defeat the Key West Conchs 28-21 on Aug. 25 and start the season 1-0.

Clewiston was leading 22-15 with two minutes remaining in the game when the Conchs scored a touchdown. Key West attempted to go for two to take the lead, but the Tiger defense stopped the conversion to make the score 22-21.

Still, Key West got the ball again with a chance to score. But once again the Tiger defense stood strong, and turned the ball back to the offense after stopping the Conchs on fourth down. The Clewiston offense took over near the Key West 1-yard line, and punched the ball in for a touchdown to go up 28-21.

The Conchs attempted one last Hail Mary in the final seconds of the game, but CHS senior Xavier Charles intercepted the pass to secure the win for the Tigers.

The Clewiston defense had 15 sacks on the night. Junior Jerrmyll Ray had a team leading five sacks, senior Prince James had four, and junior Demarion Harshaw had three.

Tiger sophomore quarterback Steaver Moore completed 10 out of 12 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore Johnkevius Rivers rushed for 103 yards on 22 carries.
