Tigers head to district playoffs

CLEWISTON– The Clewiston High School Tigers varsity boys soccer team is set to host the 4A district 13 quarterfinal at Cane Field on Feb. 3.

The Tigers’ record of 8-3-3 earned them the number three seed in the district and gave Clewiston the opportunity to host the sixth seed in the district, the 0-11-1 Dreyfoos School of the Arts Jaguars.

The Clewiston squad battled through adversity and a worldwide pandemic this year as they worked their way towards another playoff run. Led by senior and team captain Gonzalez, Clewiston has been one of the more consistent teams around the lake in recent years. Gonzalez has been an offensive powerhouse for the Tigers throughout his time with the program. He is the all-time leading scorer in school history at Clewiston.

“He makes a big difference when he’s there,” said Tigers coach Skip Crawford of Josue. “We’re working on getting him into a school somewhere to continue playing soccer — although he also kicked a 50-yard field goal this year in football. And you’d get a better scholarship playing football as opposed to soccer. He’s got a powerful leg and it works in either game.”

The Tigers closed out the regular season with three back-to-back win and a tie. The winning streak started with an 8-0 shutout of Glades Day on the road, continued with a 3-2 win over Lake Placid, and ended on another game against Glades Day, this time at home, with a 6-1 victory.

They ended the regular season with a close game against Glades Central which ended in a 4-4 tie.

“When we play our game, we can dominate,” said Crawford to his team after their last win over Glades Day. “But I don’t care who it is, we can’t lose our focus. This is a crazy year. Who knows who’s going to win it all. Why not us, right?”

The winner of the Clewiston and Dreyfoos match will go on to face Jensen Beach in the district semifinal. After that will be either Coconut Creek, Glades Central, or North Broward Prep in the district championship.

The Tigers host the Jaguars at 7 p.m. on Feb. 3 at Cane Field in Clewiston.
