Just 10 days shy of his 77th birthday, John passed away in a special care facility after dealing over eighteen months with health issues. He is no longer in pain.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Sr. and Lois Gurney and his little brother Jimmy, Always in good humor and smiling, he led a very full life with a magnitude of occupations beyond his army service in Vietnam, from a Sales Manager, to owning and operating a few businesses, to managing a radio station, to becoming the Executive Economic Director of Okeechobee City and County.
Throughout his life his true passion was fishing. Starting in Michigan with bass, blue gill, and pike fishing, and continuing around the Lake Okeechobee, Florida area, he loved to have a fishing pole in his hands So much so that he had to learn to cast with his left hand after developing Carpal Tunnel in the right wrist. Everything from a fishing guide to competitive fishing, to owning a fishing gear store, to writing articles on fishing
for local papers and magazines, he did it all.
He leaves behind his loving wife, Rosemary, of 32 years; a brother Jerry; a sister Joy; two step-children, Mathew and Jennifer; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He had pre-arranged his cremation through one of his previous occupations and has requested that his ashes be spread over Lake Michigan.
John preferred to not have a funeral service but the family would appreciate your own prayer in remembrance of him.
