Flag burning ceremony planned

Posted

OKEECHOBEE —  With National Flag Day passing and the Fourth of July coming up, many worn or tattered flags been replaced.  Okeechobee County Sheriff's Office  has recently  received numerous questions about old flags and their proper disposal.

According to the U.S. Flag Code, "The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning."

Sheriff Noel E. Stephen and Matt Buxton of Buxton Bass Funeral & Crematory are partnering to ensure these "old glories" receive a proper send-off.

The Okeechobee County Sheriff's Office will hold the collection twice a year; the first is Saturday, July 9, from 8 a.m. to noon.

The event will be at the sheriff's office, 504 NW 4th St., Okeechobee. Look for the small  tent.

Bring one flag or three barrels of flags like the local American Legion Post plans to do.

You can also drop off tattered flags at any VFW or American Legion Post.
