WEST PALM BEACH — In honor of Thursday’s National Homeless Remembrance Day, GGI (Gulfstream Goodwill Industries) will host a Candle Lighting at each GGI-managed Palm Beach County shelter simultaneously, at 6 p.m. on Dec. 21, including Melissa’s Place in Pahokee and The Senator Philip D. Lewis Center and Lewis Center Annex in West Palm Beach, for an evening to honor those who have passed away while homeless in 2023. One GGI leadership member will be present at all three shelters to guide the ceremonies which will feature a prayer led by a community pastor. The evening will conclude with a special dinner for all shelter guests.

At Melissa’s Place, there will be a guest appearance by previous Commissioner Melissa McKinley, bringing holiday toys for the shelter children. In addition, GGI’s newest microenterprise, Good Grub, will cater dinner for shelter residents.

• Melissa’s Place - 1749 East Main Street, Pahokee, FL 33476

• The Senator Philip D. Lewis Center - 1000 45th St, West Palm Beach, FL 33407
• The Lewis Center Annex - 673 Fairgrounds Road Gate 7, West Palm Beach, FL 33411

National Homeless Persons’ Remembrance Day is commemorated each year on December 21, the winter solstice and the longest night of the year. It’s a day to encourage the public to act on behalf of those who lost their lives while living on the streets of Palm Beach County. Every year, GGI helps 12,000 men, women and children in some way: through their homeless shelters, Charter School, or other initiatives to give people a way into jobs and out of poverty. Last year, GGI served 1,500 homeless individuals, helping to get them off the streets and into a safe environment. Every night, GGI has over 300 individuals in its shelters who would otherwise be on the streets.
