OKEECHOBEE — An inmate of the Okeechobee County jail was hospitalized last week after reportedly attempting suicide by cutting his wrists.

According to information from the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened at approximately 7:45 p.m. on Friday, July 7.

Deputy Ashley Rojas responded to the jail and was told the inmate was alone in his cell, while his cellmate was taking a shower. When the cellmate returned from the shower, he saw his cellmate lying on the floor, bleeding. He was unable to open the cell door and called for help.

Multiple deputies responded and struggled to open the door which was tied closed. They were able to get the door open and apply tourniquets. Okeechobee County Fire Rescue stabilized him and transported him to the hospital.

A search of the cell revealed only a plastic spork which did not appear bent, twisted or broken. Due to the extent of the injuries, detectives do not believe the spork was used to inflict them. It is not known what was used to inflict his injuries, but detectives believe they were self-inflicted.

No further information has been released.
