‘Jits to Gents’ Scholarship Fundraiser a success

Posted

CLEWISTON — With the goal of empowering young men and bringing the Hendry and surrounding communities together, Tony Perkins worked hard to pull off the Inaugural “Jits to Gents” Scholarship Fundraiser. The event, which took place at the Tree Park on Harlem Academy Avenue in Clewiston, on Perkins’ 32nd birthday — Monday, Jan. 3 — included men and boys sharply dressed in stylish suits during a photography session that captured the bold, brave bosses and their confident but caring attitudes.

Perkins is well-known in the area for being a philanthropist who possesses multiple talents. From cooking and baking to being a highly skilled makeup artist and just about anything in between, there doesn’t seem to be much he can’t do. Many of his talents are used to raise funds for various causes and organized events to help foster positivity throughout the community.

When first announcing his vision for the event, Perkins invited anyone in Hendry or surrounding counties: “We’ve had a rough 2020, so let’s shift the atmosphere and show the world we’re more than just saggy pants and guns! No offense to anyone. You are allowed to wear any color and style it any way, as long as you’re suited up.”

Perkins talked about how important it was to reach out and help wherever he can, and to help lift up others. He wanted to show the young men around him that “they can all be bosses, but that doesn’t always mean telling everyone what to do. Sometimes it means going out and doing the work that is needed.”

Perkins asked all the adults to bring a $10 donation to add to the scholarship fund. “Even if it’s just to buy one book, let’s make it happen. That book starts with us,” said Perkins. “My goal is to bless two. But with the help of everybody, God may see fit to bless more than that.”

He also stressed the importance of dressing the part: “Dress for the job you want. First impressions matter. Some of the young men are overqualified for the jobs they are interviewing for, but with a bad first impression they aren’t getting the chance.”

After the photo shoot, there was a dinner gathering where participants gave testimony about how they worked hard to overcome the many obstacles that presented themselves throughout their lives and how important hard work, perseverance and staying positive is for their communities, their families and their futures.

Participants deemed the event a success and demanded it become an annual tradition.

“Glades Lives Matter and I were overjoyed to have a part in your vision. Empowering our young people is definitely a part of our mission,” said Janet Taylor. “We look forward to continuing the partnership with dedicated organizations that further the advancement of our community.”

“Thank you, Tony Perkins for sharing and then implementing your ‘Jits to Gents’ vision where you focused on reaching into the community and engaging our young men, a.k.a our future engineers, leaders, CEOs, or doctors, into your vision! So proud of you, the parents, and all involved. Bravo!” commented Javonne Williams.

Perkins said that two well-deserving, Hendry County High School seniors, who were present at the photo shoot, will benefit from the Jits to Gents Scholarship, and donations can still be made until May 2021.
