LABELLE -- What began as a dream of bringing debate into the classroom was made into a reality   at LaBelle High School thanks to Incubate Debate and LHS Socials Studies Department Teachers.

More than 500 students in 31 social studies classrooms had the opportunity to sit in front of their peers and debate whether it was necessary for the U.S. to drop atomic bombs on Japan in 1945. Students researched, developed claims, listened, considered different perspectives, spoke and influenced one another for two days of debate.

Six amazing scholars (Emily Smith, Fabian Vazquez-Menéndez, Jaylynn Smith, Marvin Ligon, José Rodríguez & Zachary Herrera), or the top 1%, were chosen by their teachers to represent the school in the inaugural Debate Series Championship, where they debated the same topic. These fearless scholars put on a show!

LHS thanks distinguished guest judges, the honorable Judge James Sloan of the 20th Judicial Circuit Court, James Fishback, president and founder of Incubate Debate and Stephanie Busin, District 4 School Board Member for Hendry County Schools. Congratulations to the winner, Freshman, Fabian Menéndez-Vazquez!
