Man accused of stealing golf cart

OKEECHOBEE — An Okeechobee resident was accused of stealing a golf cart early Tuesday morning. Joshua Varnes, 32, Northwest 285th Way, was arrested Feb. 16 by Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Deputy Ramiro Doval and charged with possession of burglary tools, armed trespass, grand theft and unarmed burglary.

According to Doval’s report, he was dispatched in reference to a burglary at about 8:15 a.m. While en route, he spoke with the complainant, who told him he had video evidence of two men stealing his golf cart, and he was on his way from Cocoa Beach to meet the deputy.

The complainant supplied Doval with the video, and it showed two men with face coverings trying to take the golf cart. A video time-stamped 2:35 a.m. showed the two males on the golf cart, and a video at 7:59 a.m. shows the golf cart missing. It also showed a single male return to the residence carrying a machete.

When Doval arrived on the scene, he noticed a male walking out of the woods away from him and attempted to catch him but was unsuccessful. Later, he found a man, later identified as Varnes, walking around the neighborhood. Varnes matched the description of the suspect and was carrying two large machetes — one strapped across his chest and a second by his side.

When asked where he was coming from, he said he had been out fishing. When asked if he had gone on someone’s property and taken a golf cart, he became angry.

The report notes a search of the book bag Varnes was carrying produced a crow bar, pliers and gloves.

The golf cart and the second suspect were not found.

Varnes’ bond was set at $20,000.
