OKEECHOBEE- Okeechobee High School principal Lauren Myers was selected by Florida Taxwatch as one of their Principal Leadership Award winners for 2023-24.

The Principal Leadership Award program was established by Florida TaxWatch  to identify principals around the state who have had the greatest impact on their students. Myers is one of 15 principals across the state that earned the award this year.

“Principals are the lifeblood of Florida’s schools,” said Florida TaxWatch Executive acting president Jeff Kottkamp, “as leaders in their schools, they support and motivate hard-working teachers and ensure students of all ages are provided ample opportunities to succeed. That’s why Florida TaxWatch established this Principal Leadership Awards program which uses comprehensive data to determine the most effective principals in our state and reward them for the transformational impact they are having both in their schools and in their communities.”

One important extra bonus that comes with earning the award is the chance for the winning principal to give a two-year prepaid scholarship to a local student. On Feb. 21 principal Myers selected OHS senior Cristian Diaz as her scholarship recipient. The two-year scholarship was made possible with through a partnership with the Florida Prepaid College Foundation.

“The Florida Prepaid College Foundation is proud to sponsor the Principal Leadership Awards with the Foundation’s Academic A+ Challenge Match Scholarship Program,” said Florida Prepaid College Foundation director Cindy O’Connell. “We look forward to helping these 15 students realize their potential. We are grateful to organizations like Florida TaxWatch for its staunch commitment to highlighting the good works of these public servants and unyielding dedication to education in Florida.”

The award from Florida Taxwatch comes only a month after Myers was named the Okeechobee County School District Principal of the Year at the district’s employee gala on Jan. 19.
