Okeechobee Lady Brahmans secure district win over Sebring

SEBRING-  The Okeechobee High School Lady Brahman varsity volleyball team is off to a great start in district competition this season.

The Lady Brahmans got a win in their first district game of the season on Aug. 31, defeating the Sebring Lady Blue Streaks 3-0.

Okeechobee took the first set 25-19. second set 25-18, and third set 25-20. Sydney Matthews led the team with 10 kills, followed by Isabelle Veloz with 7 and Penelope Van Eman with 5. Adleigh Schwier had an impressive 11 aces against Sebring.

Sebring was the first of the four district games the Lady Brahmans hav on the schedule. Next they’ll host the Fort Pierce Westwood Lady Panthers at OHS on Sept. 18 before a rematch in Okeechobee against Sebring n Sept. 28. And at the end of the season, the Lady Brahmans host the reigning district and state champion Jensen Beach Lady Falcons.

The Lady Brahmans have a 5-2 record near the mid-point of the season. Following the win over Sebring Okeechobee fell to Vero Beach 0-3, before beating St. Edward’s 3-0 and the Centennial Lady Eagles 3-1 in back-to-back games.

Okeechobee won the first set against Centennial 25-21, with the Lady Eagles winning the second 25-21. After Okeechobee won the third set 25-19, the two teams squared off in a dramatic fourth set. Centennial was leading 19-18 before Isabelle Veloz tied the game with an ace. Later, with the Lady Brahmans up 25-23, Lexi Thomas scored a clutch ace to win the game and send the Lady Eagles home.

The Lady Brahmans are back home on Sept. 13 to face Lincoln Park Academy at 6 p.m. After that, the next match is the district game with the Fort Pierce Westwood Lady Panthers on Sept. 18.
