LABELLE – The Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Post in LaBelle reports a port-a-potty was stolen over the weekend.
Commander David Randant said the local DAV chapter hosted a flea market on Saturday to raise money to help disabled veterans. Port-a-potties were on site for the convenience of customers.
“Someone stole a port-a-potty,” he explained.
This was the second time the DAV has experienced such a theft. The first time, it cost DAV $850. This time, it will cost $550.
Randant said the thefts mean money that was raised to help veterans instead goes to pay for the stolen property. They should think about who they are stealing from, and how the loss impacts disabled veterans, he explained.
He is asking the thieves to return the stolen port-a-potty.
He’s also asking the public to help with information about the crime.
Randant said he has port-a-potties are sometimes stolen by "fly by night" contractors who cut a hole in the bottom, and then just dig a hole on the job site and place the port-a-potty over it. When they leave, they just fill in the hole with dirt and nobody knows, he added. However, the property owner could be in for a nasty surprise later.
Anyone with information about the crime should contact the Hendry County Sheriff’s Office at 863-674-4060.
