OKEECHOBEE -- The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) has a lot going on north of Lake Okeechobee, Libby Pigman told Okeechobee County Commissioners at their July 27 meeting.

The Lake Okeechobee Component A Reservoir (LOCAR) is part of Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Project (CERP), she explained. It will be built in Highlands County.

She said SFWMD will host two meetings next week about the North of Lake Okeechobee Storage Reservoir (LOCAR) Section 203 Study.

On Tuesday, Aug. 1, from 10 a.m. to noon, an open house will be held at the SFWMD Okeechobee Service Center, 316 N.W. Fifth Street, Okeechobee. Technical staff from the SFWMD will be available to answer questions about the project. No formal presentation will take place during this meeting.

On Thursday, Aug. 4, a zoom meeting is set for 2 p.m. to review the alternatives considered, the proposed plan, and the project benefits. Members of the public will be able to ask questions and provide public comment at the meeting.  For more information, go online to sfwmd.gov.

The Lower Kissimmee Basin Stormwater Treatment Area is a water cleaning project that is near Lazy 7, she continued. “It’s a public/private partnership with a company called EIP.” EIP will address the commission at their Aug. 10 meeting.

Pigman said EIP has also scheduled two public meetings about the project on Aug. 29 at the Okeechobee County Civic Center on U.S. 98. The first meeting will be from 2 to 4 p.m. The second meeting will be from 5 to 7 p.m. A presentation about the project will start at 6 p.m.

Work is also underway on the Lake Okeechobee Watershed Restoration Project (LOWRP), Pigman continued.

LOWRP is also a CERP project. This project includes ASR wells and two wetlands restoration features. Wetlands will be restored in the Paradise Run area and in Kissimmee River center. Pigman said some of the wetlands property is already in SFWMD ownership and SFWMD is in negotiations with landowners for the other property needed for wetlands restoration plans.

This fall there will be some PDT meetings about the ASR wells and wetlands projects, she explained. Those meeting dates have not yet been set.
