Vegetation creates obstacle on Lake Okeechobee Waterday

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is advising commercial and recreational vessels of vegetation on Route 2 of the Lake Okeechobee Waterway in the navigation channel and to use caution when navigating.

Route 2 near South Bay boat ramp is partially blocked. A mechanical harvester will be working to clear the vegetation on Route 2 in South Bay from Thursday Oct. 12  in the afternoon through Sunday, Oct. 15, including the weekend, and advises boaters to be careful.

Located in central and southern Florida, the 451,000 acre lake and 154 mile long waterway extends from the Atlantic Ocean at Stuart, to the Gulf of Mexico at Fort Meyers. The waterway runs through Lake Okeechobee and consists of the Caloosahatchee River to the west of the lake and the St. Lucie Canal east of the lake.
