Okeechobee Winn-Dixie open for business

OKEECHOBEE  -- The Okeechobee Winn Dixie store reopened Sunday, June 18.

The store was closed for several days after being damaged by a June 15 storm.

At 6:19 p.m. on June 15, the National Weather Service issued a thunderstorm warning for southeastern Okeechobee County. According to the report issued by the National Weather Service the radar indicated 60 mph wind gusts and quarter sized hail.

Images posted by customers in Winn-Dixie showed roof tiles and littering the floor in the produce department and extensive leaking throughout the front of the store near the cash registers. Customers thanked the Winn-Dixie employees for helping keep them safe while the storm passed.

According to store officials, no one was injured.

Winn Dixie issued the following statement on Friday, June 16: "The safety of our people – associates and customers – is of paramount importance and always acts as our guiding principle. As we assess the damage sustained to our Okeechobee Winn-Dixie store, we are making our best effort to reopen as quickly and safely as possible to continue to serve and support our local community."

On June 18, the store reopened.
