CLEWISTON- The Clewiston High School Tigers varsity football team will be hitting the road this week to take on the Calvary Christian Eagles.

Calvary Christian is 2-1 this season, with wins over Belen Jesuit and Pine Crest.

The Tigers are still searching for their first win. Clewiston fell to Centennial 16-9 in the season opener on Aug. 26 and lost to the Sebring Blue Streaks 20-10 on Sept. 2.

Clewiston had chances to pull out a win in both game. Against Centennial the Achilles Heel for the Tigers was the quaterback and center exchange. A few dropped snaps really killed offensive drives for the Tigers on the night.

The offense remained in somewhat of a funk for the Sebring game as well. But special teams shined for the Tigers against Sebring. Freshman Johnkevious Rivers had a 92-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against the Blue Streaks.

The Tigers had a bye last week, giving the coaching staff a week to work on getting the offense to coalesce.

Calvary Christian should be a good test for the Clewiston squad on the road this week in Fort Lauderdale. Last season the Tigers managed to defeat Calvary 38-23. But many of the players that helped secure that victory, like Zomarion Harper and Johnny Crawford, have graduated. Those losses help explain the Tigers growing pains on offense this season.

But on defense, Clewiston has looked stout. Eventually, the offense will start clicking. And once that happens you have to imagine it won’t be long before the Tigers get in the win column again.

The Tigers and Eagles kickoff at 7 p.m. on Sept. 16.
