Moore Haven is home to the annual Chalo Nitka Festival, which is held the first weekend in March. While the festival started in 1949 to celebrate the paving of a main street, Chalo Nitka now celebrates the community’s rural heritage, strong ties to the Seminole Tribe of Florida and the great fishing on Lake Okeechobee.

The site of Moore Haven was first occupied by early native Americans, and later Seminoles.

The town was named after its founder, James A. Moore. In its early days, Moore Haven was often called "Little Chicago" because it was located at the junction of the Caloosahatchee River Canal and Lake Okeechobee. It was a significant boom town in the days when riverboat traffic came past Moore Haven with cargos of fruits, vegetables, and cattle from central Florida.

The Glades County News began as the Glades County Democrat in 1922. In 2018, the Glades County Democrat, the Clewiston News, and The Sun (in Belle Glade/Pahokee) and the Okeechobee News were merged into the Lake Okeechobee, which is printed weekly on Wednesdays. The Glades County News digital edition is updated daily online.
