Parent wants school district to address incident with school bus driver

Posted

LABELLE – Jacqueline Scott wants some answers from the Hendry County School District regarding actions of a school bus driver on Oct. 25, 2023.

Scott spoke to the school board during the citizen comment period of its regular meeting Feb. 20, describing how one of the school district’s bus drivers closed the door on her arm and that of another parent.

According to Scott, she approached the bus driver to ask why she was shutting the bus door on her children. While she agrees she “talks with her hands,” she said she did not threaten or curse the driver, but the driver shut the door on Scott and another parent’s hands.

The other parent was taller and was able to remove their hand, Scott said.

As far as Scott knows, no action was taken against the bus driver, who is still driving to this day.

“The only thing I’m here today is trying to get some kind of justice on what are they going to do with this lady because that is not right,” she said. “I pressed charges and everything and she’s still driving the bus.”

Since then, Scott has been forced to pay others to drive her children to school or drive them herself.

She said she has videos of the incident and has been trying to get some answers from the school district, having reached out to several school board members, at least one Hendry County commissioner and even the Superintendent of Schools, Michael Swindle.

“I’ve left messages for you to  give me a phone call, Mr. Swindle, but all the times I call they say you are in a meeting, you was busy,” she said. “I came up here several times. I’m just fighting for justice. Wrong is wrong and right is right.”

Chairperson Jon Busin said the board would ask Swindle to investigate.
