Recently, Ken Sposato and Stephanie Sposato, the owners of Stonewall Towing & Recovery, decided to pay it forward with the hope of uplifting our community’s spirit, during this pandemic. When asked about writing the story up for the paper, they were quite humble about it.

“It’s not really all that great of a story. I mean we love our town. We love the people in it, and we’ve been very fortunate. We stay fairly busy through this whole coronavirus thing, so to be able to give back a little and maybe put a smile on a few peoples faces… As well as help them out, that’s really all we were looking to do,” replied Ken Sposato. He went on to explain, “We gave $750 to two local restaurants, Two Peas Café and the Quart House, and told them both to just use it. When people would come in with their orders, just use it to pay for peoples food orders, until there wasn’t anything left.”

“I like to help people, I am most motivated by myself, to be better tomorrow than I was yesterday,” said Ken, “When I meet someone, or read about someone who gives back, someone who puts selflessness over self- that inspires me.”

They’ve operated their towing and recovery business in Hendry County for over a year now. Stephanie was born in Clewiston, and grew up in Alva and LaBelle. Ken, originally from New Jersey but having lived in Florida for 34 years, moved to Hendry after meeting Stephanie.

“We both believe that the morals & values that are shared by most of the people in this area reflect a lot of our own,” explained Ken. “Stephanie and I both have older children from a previous marriage, and we have a 11 yr. old daughter, and a 3 year old son. Family and friends mean everything to us, we enjoy spending time together.”

“My official title is President, but I prefer ‘Guy who gets it done’,” says Ken, who started out in the towing business as a second job, to help support his family. “I liked helping people and I liked the constant change in the day to day so much that as soon as I could afford to start my own, I did.”

Stonewall Towing and Recovery provides essential services such as: towing for cars, trucks, boats, RV’s and tractor trailers, equipment transportation including agricultural implement transport, roadside assistance like tire changes, lock out service, jump starts, and winching. The also provide both short and long term, secure storage for vehicles.

When asked to describe their business, Ken replied, “We are the one’s you can depend on. Lets face it, hardly anyone thinks much about “needing” a tow truck or roadside assistance. Often times when our services are needed it can be both stressful and traumatic. We want people to know they can trust us to take good care of their vehicle and their families and give the best service we can.”

His biggest current worries, regarding the pandemic, are the about whether or not the economy will reopen soon enough. Since the stay-at-home precautions were announced, things have changed for the Sposatos. “Naturally our customer calls have declined drastically. With less people on the roads we are doing a lot less broken down vehicle calls, and our Roadside Assistance calls have been almost non-existant,” explained Ken. “Because we do Commercial Truck Towing, that has helped fill in some of the gaps, but overall the stay at home order has impacted our bottom line.”

“Because a lot of times customers cars will break down, and require us to give them a ride, we have outfitted all our trucks with extra hand sanitizer, wipes, and even masks and gloves to make a customer feel more at ease about traveling with us,” Ken went on to say, “We are doing our best to follow all the CDC guidelines, but understand this, if you are broke down and require a ride, we will give you one.”

Ken said their days start with a phone call or an appointment, and “We constantly remind ourselves to be cautious and practice the CDC protocol’s. We just do our best in the safest way we can,” adding, “A typical day may be towing a car to a dealership for some warranty work, then maybe transport a piece of equipment for a local farmer, followed by winching out a Tractor that gets stuck in an Orange Grove or Cane Field. All in a days work.”

When asked what the community can do to make things easier or safer for them while they’re working, Ken said, “Practice good hygiene and be aware of your own personal health.”

What are Ken’s hopes for the future? “For my business, that it grows to become the premier towing & recovery business in South Central Florida,” he added, “For life in general, that we all do just a little more each time we can to be better people, and make someone smile.”
