The Weekly Clothesline: Wisdom in the Letter of James

Posted

The Letter of James, while only five chapters in the Bible, is jam packed with practical truth and wisdom. It reads like a how-to book on Christian living. It’s truly a blueprint on becoming a doer of the Word, and not just a hearer.

James gives us practical guidelines for living a life of grace that includes God. He talks about how we tend to make our own plans, and then ask God for His blessing. I’m sure that rings true for many of us. It’s good to have goals, but goals can disappoint us if we leave God out of them.

James wants us to invite God into our lives, and if we make plans, we must hold on to our plans loosely. If we put God’s desires at the center of our planning, we will never be disappointed. James tells us that plans are good, but we should remember that life is short. Enjoy today; reach out to your loved ones, so if tomorrow doesn’t come, you will have fulfilled God’s plan for you.

Jesus, James, the Holy Spirit, your conscience — all tell us to be doers of the Word, and not just hearers. In this short letter, you will find wisdom and grace to direct you in the way you should go. Your faith will be renewed and in a world that is primarily self-centered, you can become a breath of fresh air to someone in need.
