Big Lake Athlete of the Week: Andre Santiago

Posted

Okeechobee High School junior Andre Santiago is this week’s Big Lake Athlete of the Week for his performance with the Brahman varsity football team.

Santiago has made life difficult for opposing quarterbacks this season. During Okeechobee’s 49-0 win over DeSoto County on Aug. 25, Santiago had three sacks. He had three sacks again in the Brahmans’ 48-0 victory over Ambassadors Christian Academy on Sept. 8.

Through Okeechobee’s first six games, Santiago has recorded 10 sacks. Those 10 sacks not only make him the sack leader on the Brahmans, but also have him ranked as number one in sacks in Okeechobee’s district, second in the division, and 14th in the state of Florida.

The Okeechobee defense under assistant coach Jared Wigger has held opponents scoreless in three of their six games. The Brahman defense has six interceptions so far this season and has forced 10 fumbles.

Sophomore John White is averaging 5 tackles a game for Okeechobee this season with 27 tackles, while senior Vincent Cantalini leads the team with 8 tackles for loss.

The Brahmans will need their defense to continue to play at high level as they enter the last leg of the regular season. District powerhouse Sebring will be a challenge for Okeechobee on Oct. 27, and there’s Lake Okeechobee rival Clewiston awaiting the Brahmans in the regular season finale on Nov. 3
