OKEECHOBEE — Special Olympics choose an athlete of the year for each county every year, and these athletes are invited to attend the Special Olympics Gala in Orlando. The athletes are not chosen on sports accomplishments alone -- it can be for anything they have done over the year that involves Special Olympics. This year, RJ Sandefur was picked by Special Olympics staff as Okeechobee County Athlete of the year . RJ became quite a hit while singing the National Anthem at numerous Special Olympics events including the Special Olympics State Games. He also became a member of the Special Olympics Athlete Leadership committee. Congratulations to RJ for being chosen as the 2023 Okeechobee County Athlete of the Year.
