The Weekly Clothesline: “Go and make disciples"

Posted

Easter is behind us. Jesus has returned to heaven. And He has sent His Holy Spirit to be with us forever. Do you ever wonder what that really means?

When I think about these three events — the Resurrection, the Ascension, and Pentecost — I’m reminded of the power and awe of our God. Such things that were accomplished were amazing, close to unbelievable, and truly filled with blessings. So is it any wonder that some people question these events?

I am a true believer and sometimes shake my head wondering when thinking about a “man” who died a horrible death, returning to life again, ascending into heaven in the sight of his followers, and then sending His Holy Spirit to remain with us forever. Sometimes all this is more than we can comprehend.

But the reminder is this: this “man” that we call Jesus is also God, and nothing is impossible with God. He couldn’t stay here with us because his forever existence is heavenly. But he left us with a “helper” — the Holy Spirit — to guide and direct our life on earth.

And this Holy Spirit comes with the power to fulfill the Great Commission by Jesus Himself: Go into the world and preach the Gospel to everyone. So if two thousand years ago, a motley crew of twelve fishermen could transform the known world by preaching the Gospel, what’s stopping us?

About the author: Previously the priest at St. Francis of Assisi in Lake Placid for 21 years, Rev. Elizabeth L. Nelson is now the Priest at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in LaBelle.
