Agriculture is the primary industry for the communities adjacent to rich muck soil south of Lake Okeechobee.

Pahokee was incorporated in 1922. The name "Pahokee" means "grassy waters" in the Creel language.

“Her Soil is Her Fortune” is the motto of Belle Glade. The City of Belle Glade is known for rich cropland that produces winter produce for much of the Eastern United States, as well as sweet corn and sugar cane. The City of Belle Glade was established in 1925.

Belle Glade and neighboring Pahokee have a strong football tradition, with the rival high school teams competing in the annual “muck bowl.”

Each fall, the Black Gold Jubilee celebrates the end of the harvest season.

The Dolly Hand Cultural Arts Center on the campus of Palm Beach State College in Belle Glade provides a wide range of top entertainment including concerts, the ballet, specialty acts and even Broadway shows.

In 2018, The Sun newspaper, serving Belle Glade, Pahokee, South Bay and Canal Point, merged with the Okeechobee News, the Clewiston News and the Glades County Democrat to become the Lake Okeechobee News. The Lake Okeechobee News print edition is published every Wednesday. The online digital edition for The Sun is updated daily.
