Okeechobee High School senior Amayoa'ah Phillips is this week’s Big Lake Athlete of the Week for his performance on the Brahman varsity basketball team.
Phillips is currently leading the 10-3 Brahmans in scoring this season with 259 points. He also leads Okeechobee in steals with 32 so far this season
Throughout the month of December Phillips and the Brahmans put together a six game win streak and are entering the second half of their season with some momentum. The streak began with a 75-25 drubbing of Moore Haven on Dec. 3. Okeechobee took control of that game early, going up 33-1 by the end of the first quarter.
Okeechobee followed that up with a big 52-40 victory over their district foe Port St. Lucie on Dec. 7. Ammayoa’ah led the Brahmans in scoring against Port St. Lucie with 26 points. Port St. Lucie held an early lead in the game, but a rally in the second half of the game let Okeechobee come away with the victory.
The Brahmans are currently 3-0 in district matchups.
Phillips would go one to lead the Brahmans in scoring in their next four games following the win over Port St. Lucie. Phillips scored 20 against Pahokee, 37 against South Fork, 20 against Jensen Beach, and 17 against Celebration.
The Brahmans are attempting to make another run in the district playoffs after getting knocked out in the first round last year by the eventual district champion Suncoast Chargers. Amayoa’ah’s offensive output can help the team get there, and he won’t have to do it alone.
Okeechobee has a well-rounded team with contributors at every position. Jayquavious Thomas, Daniel Phillips, Luke Bryan, Corey Wilkerson, and Charlie Van Emann have all had clutch moments that have contributed to the Brahmans 10 wins so far this season.
