OKEECHOBEE -- Who’s the spy? Who has the plans? And why do folks just wander in and out of other people’s homes in this small town?

On Friday, Oct. 20, the Okeechobee Community Theatre production of “Exit Who?” had the opening night audience guessing – and laughing -- a lot.

Tina Welbourn did an outstanding job in her first outing as a director. The fast-paced comedy whodunnit combines verbal and physical humor with some memorable characters.

Grace Thomas is Crane Hammon, a writer who has rented a house for a month to work on a new book. She accidentally arrives a day early and winds up in the middle of a real-life spy story. If she solves the mystery, she might just have the plot for a best seller.

Jane Kaufman Robards is Kate Bixley, Hammon’s secretary and wise-cracking Girl Friday. She’s just returned from travels abroad, but didn’t pay attention to any famous sites. A New York gal, she’s quick with quips. But could she be the spy?

Tom Murray is the bumbling Col. Wilfred Wooster. Like his memory, Wooster tends to wander.  The townspeople have apparently gotten so used to the confused retiree just showing up in their homes that some just set an extra place at the table. They’ve also gotten used to his wild stories, which he may or may not believe himself.

Joshua Boon is CIA agent Joel Dover … or is he? Hammon and Bixley aren’t sure they can believe anything he says … even before apparently loses his memory, along with part of his disguise.

Kenny Feightner is Sheriff Veron Cookley, the friendly … maybe a little too friendly … local law enforcement officer. He apparently has time for lot of different jobs in town as the latest crime wave was the theft of a few candy bars.

Laurie Garner is Jewel, housekeeper and cook assigned to Hammon for the month.  An imposing figure no one would dare defy, the tough-as-nails Jewel is a fan of Hammond’s writing – especially a certain page of her last book.

Susan Van Cleve plays Real Estate Agent and newspaper gossip columnist Lydia Scott. Like everyone else, she just wanders in an out of the Hammond’s rented house at all times of the day and night, eager to find a “scoop.” Or is she looking for something more?

James Garner plays Cyrus D. Conway, a recluse who is wealthy and mysterious, but also pushy. He alternately barges in, hides and bursts upon the scene.

The set’s four entrances add to the chaos. A closet connects with the library. The telephone is connected to Mabel, the last live telephone operator in the country. The crazy cast of characters coming and going from all directions keeps the action lively and the audience enthralled.

Joey Marcinek is the assistant director. Grace Morgan is the stage manager. Leah Teele is stage crew. Tina Welbourn handled set design. Laura Murray and Rebecca McCoury is in charge of lights. Grace Morgan is in charge of sound. Jane Kaufman Robards and Caroline Crews did photography and marketing.

On Saturday, Oct. 21, a matinee performance will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3, there will be a performance at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, a matinee will be at 2 p.m.

Starting this year $10 student tickets will be available at the door for children and youth or anyone with a student ID.
