OKEECHOBEE — The Education Foundation of Okeechobee, in its continuous effort to enhance educational opportunities for local students, is thrilled to announce new partnerships with the Okeechobee County Fire Rescue (OCFR) and Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO). Beginning in January 2024, Okeechobee County Schools will introduce two groundbreaking Career and Technical Education (CTE) Programs at Okeechobee High School: an “Intro to Firefighting” and a “Public Safety Telecommunications” course. These initiatives are supported by funding awarded from the Consortium of Florida Education Foundations and the Florida Department of Education.

Alaina Barron, executive director of the Education Foundation of Okeechobee, remarked, “Our vision extends beyond traditional education; we are creating pathways for students to discover, learn, and thrive in real-world careers. These programs epitomize that vision, preparing our youth for impactful careers while fostering resilience, citizenship, and critical thinking.”

The “Dispatch and Fire CTE Program” aims to provide students with pivotal technical skills tailored to their chosen industry. The dispatch program covers the essentials of command structures, communication protocols, and the intricacies of multi-agency coordination. Simultaneously, the fire program ensures students master vital safety procedures, firefighting techniques, and first responder medical protocols. Both programs emphasize hands-on exercises, industry visits, and interactive modules, ensuring students are well-equipped for the professional environment.

Deputy Chief Hazellief, of the OCFR, who has been instrumental in pioneering these programs, stated, “Empowering our youth with specialized skills not only bridges the gap between education and practical vocations but also strengthens our community. When our students become certified professionals, it’s a win-win for all: they embark on promising careers, and our community gains skilled contributors.”

Daryl Roehm, the CTE Coordinator for Okeechobee County Schools, has played a crucial role in bringing these programs to the district, ensuring students have access to these valuable career pathways.

With the introduction of these CTE programs, the Education Foundation of Okeechobee, OCFR, and the OCSO are dedicated to cultivating Okeechobee’s future workforce, ensuring its strength and resilience.
