Okeechobee Healthy Start trains doulas

Posted

OKEECHOBEE — Over the weekend, Okeechobee Healthy Start trained 15 doulas who will work in the Okeechobee community.

A doula is a professional childbirth assistant who provides personalized care, education and emotional support.

Healthy Start was fortunate to be awarded funding for a Doula Workforce Development project for Okeechobee residents, working in partnership with Humana Healthcare and Indian River County Healthy Start Coalition. With no delivery hospital and a lack of prenatal care, this is a huge step in bettering the maternal and child health outcomes in a maternal health desert.

This funding allowed Healthy Start to train and certify 15 doulas, utilizing the G.R.O.W. Doula training curriculum.
