OKEECHOBEE — The Okeechobee Historical Society had as a special guest at their December meeting, John Williams, representing the Okeechobee Cattlemen’s Association. He shared with the members that the organization now state-wide began in Okeechobee in the 30s and is still active and supports many local organizations. He then went on to present to the Historical Society a $1,000 check to be used in the development of the agriculture museum that is to be created in the Primitive Baptist Historic site.

The Okeechobee Historical Society has entered into a partnership with the City of Okeechobee to convert it to a public museum with a “God and Country” theme. It is our intent to display the history of churches in our area in the main church building by developing banners with photos and written histories of each of the designated “historic” churches.

In the fellowship hall, our thoughts are to display memorabilia that is the “country” part of our theme. We would like donations from our agriculture community be it cattle, dairy, farming, trucking, lumber, fishing or other associated industries that were a part of the story of Okeechobee.

In other news, the Historical Society will once again host “Saturday’s At The Museum” during the season. The main museum at 1850 US Hwy 98 N and the Raulerson Log Cabin at 811 SW 2nd Avenue will be open from 9 am until noon on January 21, Feb 18, Mar 18, and April 15, 2023. Admission is free!
