A new children's book features a legendary Lake Okeechobee angler.
"Cindy Sue and the Lunker Club" is a story for kids about how much fun fishing can be. But adults will enjoy this illustrated book by longtime B.A.S.S. Senior Writer Robert U. Montgomery as well.
Although she doesn’t want to, a 12-year-old girl goes bass fishing with her grandfather. She quickly learns it’s not nearly as boring as she feared it would be and, in fact, she loves spending time on the water with Pap Pa. And when she also hooks -- and loses -- a big bass her first time out, she discovers that battling a big one is “better than flying downhill on a roller coaster.”
Now hooked on bass fishing, will she ever get another chance to catch a lunker? For her birthday, Pap Pa arranges for them two of them to go fishing on Lake Okeechobee with Big Sam.
Big Sam was the nickname for legendary guide and luremaker Sam Griffin, who died in 2021, and this book is dedicated to him.
"Cindy Sue and the Lunker Club" also pays tribute to B.A.S.S and its founder, Ray Scott, as well as legends of bass fishing Bill Dance, Roland Martin, Jimmy Houston, and Penny Berryman. Plus, it recognizes Florida’s TrophyCatch, a program that recognizes anglers for the big bass they catch.

Sam Griffin was born on a houseboat on Lake Okeechobee in 1937 and spent his life fishing the Big O and teaching others about it. The angler, guide and lure designer was inducted into the National Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame in 2018.
On June 12, 2021 Glades County Commissioners honored “the man, the myth, the legend and the teacher,” by putting his name on the observation tower at Harney Pond.
