OKEECHOBEE -- At their Oct. 12 meeting, the Okeechobee County Board of Commissioners proclaimed October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month
The proclamation notes breast cancer takes the lives of almost 40,000 United States women each year. Death rates are declining due to improved detection and treatment, with the treatment of breast cancer having improved thanks to continued research completed by the American Cancer Society, mammography and other methods, it states. Detection of breast cancer at an early stage greatly improves the chances for successful treatment and survival.
