Okeechobee County announces road closure at SW 16th Street

SW 16th Street, from SW 10th Drive to SW 24th Avenue

OKEECHOBEE — Okeechobee County has scheduled a road closure at Southwest 16th Street, from Southwest 10th Drive to Southwest 24th Avenue beginning Monday, October 2, 2023 to Friday, October 13, 2023 (daytime hours only).

The Okeechobee Utility Authority (OUA) is currently undergoing a large septic to sewer construction project [Southwest Wastewater Service Area (SWSA) Project 2 Septic to Sewer Conversion] within the area of SW 16th Street and SW 24th Avenue. To continue this project, the OUA and its contractor, Hinterland Group, Inc., the road closure is necessary on SW 16th Street, from SW 10th Drive to SW 24th Avenue, from Monday, October 2, 2023 to Friday, October 13, 2023 (daytime hours only in accordance with the County’s Land Development Regulations). The proposed road closure request is approximately 0.5 miles in length with a detour route of approximately 1.7 miles. Residents within the closed off area will have access to their homes with the help of flaggers.

OUA and the project contractor will maintain flaggers on-site during daytime work construction hours (in accordance with the County’s Land Development Regulations) to provide residents and property owners with safe access through this area while also ensuring proper and safe working conditions for OUA and the contractor. The proposed road closure and detour route map have been prepared by OUA and the project contractor and reviewed by the county engineer, assistant road and bridge director, and assistant public works director.

Drivers are urged to follow the detour route, drive with caution and plan ahead to allow for more time to pass through the area as the traffic volume on surrounding streets may be higher than usual. For additional information, please contact OUA 863-763-9460 or the county engineer: Stef Matthes at phone 772-464-3537 Ext. 114 or Email: smatthes@ct-eng.com.
