OKEECHOBEE -- The tragic shooting in Maine this week hit home. The daughter of Okeechobee resident Alicia Lachance was among the shooting victims.

According to reports from Maine, 18 people were killed and 13 injured when a gunman opened fire at Just-In-Time Recreation bowling alley and at Schemengees Bar & Grille, about 4 miles away, in Lewiston, Maine on Wednesday.

Tricia Asselin was bowling with her sister when the shooting started, explained Lachance. She was trying to call 911 when she was hit. Tricia worked at the bowling alley but Wednesday was her night off.

Tricia was a single mother who was active in the community. She worked for Make A Wish and raised money for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation.

“She was the best sports mom,” Lachance continued.  She coached baseball. She played sports. She kept her son active in sports.

Tricia set a good example, Lachance continued. “She never drank. She never smoked. She never did drugs.”

Lachance said they almost lost Tricia twice, once as newborn and once when she was 17 when she fell off a cliff.

Tricia lived life to the fullest. “She said you can’t go around being scared,” said her mother.

Lachance said the shooter apparently didn’t care who he was killing.

“My daughter was too good to go that way,” she said.

UPDATE:  The gunman, identified by Maine officials as Robert Card, 40, was found dead near the Androsoggin River at 7:45 p.m. on Oct. 27.  In a press conference, Maine Department of Public Safety Commissioner Mike Sauschuck said Card had "an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound."
