Our Village opens Center for Arts and Education

Posted

OKEECHOBEE -- Our Village Okeechobee held a ribbon cutting for their new Center for Arts and Education, 202 N.E. Second Street, on Sept 6, on N.E. Second Street, across the street from the main Our Village Building.

Director Elaine Keller said the center will offer after school tutoring, home school help, peer support, art classes, Mommy & Me classes and more. “We’re trying to offer different things to get more people involved,” Keller explained.

Tutoring will be available for kindergarten through 12th grade students. Parents can contact Keller if their child needs a tutor for a particular subject. “I will try my hardest to find that tutor,” she said. For students in the public school system, the Okeechobee County School District will cover the cost for tutoring those children who need that extra help, she explained.

She said donations will be requested for the art classes. Most students signed up for the art classes are elementary school age, she said, but the teacher is willing to teach all ages. Keller said they plan to offer art classes for adults as a fun way to relieve stress.

Our Village has offered some of these services in the past, but they were limited to the space available in their organization’s main building. Keller said they are excited to have a dedicated space. The center has room to group children by age or activity, with a special area designed for the youngest family members.

The first art class will be on Friday, Sept. 8. Class cost is $20. Participants are asked to bring a watercolor journal and paints.
