Family seeks justice for teen killed in shooting

OKEECHOBEE – The family of an Okeechobee teen who was killed in a shooting has set up a Gofundme.com page to raise money to help law enforcement officials find justice.

In his Gofundme.com post shared Sept. 24, Cole Owens wrote:

“My name is Cole Owens, and I'm reaching out to you with a request for support. It's with a heavy heart that I share the reason behind this fundraiser: to seek justice for my little brother, whose life was tragically cut short at the age of 16 in a senseless shooting.

“The Okeechobee County Sheriff's Office has already offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of those responsible. However, our family is determined to go above and beyond to ensure that those responsible for this heinous act are brought to justice.

“That's why we've initiated this fundraiser, with the sole purpose of raising additional reward money to encourage anyone with vital information to come forward. Rest assured; every single dollar donated will be dedicated to this cause.

“We understand that these are challenging times, and not everyone may be in a position to donate. If that's the case, we kindly ask for your support in another way — by sharing this fundraiser with someone you know. Your help in spreading the word is just as invaluable as any financial contribution.

“From the depths of our hearts, we express our gratitude to everyone who has already shown support, and we extend our appreciation to those who will continue to support us in our pursuit of justice.

“Thank you in advance for your kindness, compassion, and unwavering support during this difficult time."

The Florida Sheriffs Association Criminal Apprehension Assistance Program has pledged $5,000 in available reward funds for those who give helpful information that leads to an arrest/prosecution of a subject involved in the shooting.

According to the Okeechobee County Sheriff's Office report, in the early hours of Sunday morning, August 27, 2023, OCSO deputies responded to Scott Driver Park, 10209 US Highway 78 West, Okeechobee, about a shooting during a Quinceañera.

Multiple gunshot wound victims were treated by Emergency Medical Services. One of the victims subsequently succumbed to his wounds at HCA Raulerson Hospital.

On Sept. 8, 2023, Sabastian Urbano, 17, was arrested on an Okeechobee County Warrant for Second Degree Murder with a Firearm, for which he is charged as an adult.  His bond is $750,000, and he is still awaiting arraignment in the Okeechobee County Jail.

The incident is still an ongoing investigation, and the Okeechobee County Sheriff's Office is asking for anyone with pictures, video, or information about the shooting to contact them. If you have any information, contact Detective Brady Rogers (863) 763-3117 Ext. 5111 or contact Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers at 800-273-8477.
