The Easter Bunny comes early for children in foster care

Posted

PORT SAINT LUCIE — The Easter Bunny hopped into town early this year, bringing with him 300 baskets of goodies from the Britney Lee Foundation.

Case managers with Communities Connected for Kids – the nonprofit organization that oversees the child-welfare community in Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee and St. Lucie counties - will deliver the baskets to children in local foster care through Easter.

The Britney Lee Foundation is a Fort Pierce-based nonprofit founded in honor of Britney Lee Poindexter, who was killed in a 2018 car accident at the age of 17. Yvonne Poindexter, Britney Lee’s mom, started the foundation and coordinates the Easter basket project. Last year, the foundation distributed 1,200 Easter baskets to the children of St Lucie County through funds raised in an annual duck race.

Foundation volunteers described Britney Lee as a ray of sunshine in the lives of others - “She accepted people for who they were and encouraged them to embrace what makes them happy.”

The foundation’s annual duck race takes place in Fort Pierce in the fall. A date for this year’s fundraiser has not yet been set, but more information is available at britneylee.org. For more information about CCKids or the local foster care community, visit cckids.net.
