OKEECHOBEE — A ramp formerly used at Trail of Hope animal shelter has been given to a veteran in need.
The shelter closed recently, due to lack of volunteers. Helping Trail of Hope with their cleanup efforts, the Okeechobee County Sheriff's Office offered their aluminum ramp to Amy Fisher, Director of the OCSO Animal Shelter, wanting it to go towards a good cause within the community.
Sheriff Noel E. Stephen and Fisher contactedlocal veteran Greg Maynard, known within the Okeechobee Community for helping veterans.
As fate would have it, Maynard knew a Vietnam veteran who needed a ramp installed at his home as a condition of release from the hospital.
Detention Deputy Rick Long and his crew set out to make it happen, and this past Monday, the vet was gifted the ramp.
"Foremost, Sheriff Stephen and all of us at the OCSO thank everyone at the Trail of Hope for the years of service to the Okeechobee Community. It says a lot about an organization and the people who ran it, that in its most challenging times, you continued to give to others," OCSO shared on social media.
