According to the accident report, the driver was travelling east in the outside lane of State Road 70 approaching Southwest Third Avenue when he became ill and lost control of his 2005 red Ford pickup truck. He left the lane of travel and ran onto the sidewalk striking a speed-limit sign as he continued toward the parks. He hit a tree, removing it from the ground and then, the truck continued across both lanes of traffic on Southwest Second Avenue and on to the east sidewalk, striking memorial monuments before coming to a rest. The driver was helped from the vehicle by deputies and was transported to Raulerson Hospital.
Gregg Maynard and Matt Buxton are assessing the damage and already have plans to fix the monuments.
The stones that were damaged display the names of veterans whose family members or friends donated money for the monument. In some cases, veterans donated money to have their own names on the stones. The only requirement was the veteran have an honorable or a general discharge.
If your loved one's name is on one of the stones, you can rest assured it will not be lost.
