Clewiston and Inlet Grove football suspended following incident

CLEWISTON The Florida High School Athletic Association has suspended the Clewiston Tiger football team indefinitely following an incident during a game against Inlet Grove on Oct. 19.

Inlet Grove was forced to suspend their football activities as well. The team had to forfeit their upcoming game against King's Academy.

The suspension is indefinite pending the results of an investigation by the FHSAA of the Oct. 19 incident. Clewiston High School and the Hendry County School District released a statement saying they will comply fully with any information the FHSAA requests and that the incident does not reflect their standards or values .

The Tigers were leading Inlet Grove 27-13 when the game was called in the third quarter due to a fight that broke out between the two teams. CHS freshman Amos Bradford had just rumbled into the endzone for a touchdown with 30 seconds left in the third quarter. On that play a defensive end for Inlet Grove put a borderline unsportsmanlike hit on CHS quarterback Ty Murray, which Murray to his credit, didn’t escalate or retaliate to.

On the ensuing kickoff things took a turn for the worse. After the kickoff, the teams began to push and shove each other near the Inlet Grove sideline. Coaches were able to get both teams back to their sideline after a few minutes, but things flared up again only a few seconds later after an Inlet Grove coach squared up to a Clewiston coach.

Facebook live video from the game appeared to show an Inlet Grove coach aggressively step towards a Clewiston coach in the middle of the field as both teams were headed to the sidelines. After that, both teams rushed the field, the brawl continued, and the game was called by officials.

It’s not the first time this season Inlet Grove has been aggressive at the end of games they were losing. During the final snap of their 29-6 loss to Pahokee on Sept. 1, flags were thrown after multiple Inlet Grove defenders slammed a Pahokee ball carrier down well after the whistle had blown. The Pahokee coaching staff were quick to get their players back to the sideline before things escalated and the Blue Devils were able to celebrate the victory with no further incidents.

Clewiston was set to host their Homecoming game against Okeechobee on Nov 3. The Hendry County School District said that even if the game isn’t played, the CHS Homecoming festivities will still be held. The parade will be held at 3 p.m. on Nov. 3, and there will be a Homecoming event at Cane Field on Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. where the Homecoming Queen and King will be announced.
