SEBRING — Highlands Hammock will hold a series of guided nature walks during the busy winter season from January through March. Visitors may take leisurely walks with staff and volunteer trail guides and explore the park, observe birds and spot reptiles. For children and families, the Saturday Kids Discovery Nature Walks are resuming and will be held twice monthly on Saturday mornings from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

A Saturday Kids walk on the Wild Orange Trail is scheduled for Jan. 27. Visitors are instructed to meet in the picnic area at the Music in the Park stage. This program, which is ideal for scout troops and other youth groups, is designed for children aged 5 to 13 years and includes exploratory activities and scavenger hunts. Young people may learn about plants, animals, habitats, food chains, animal adaptations and more. Children will learn to observe and sharpen skills to explore nature in their own backyards as well as the park. Although registration is not required, it is requested by calling 863-386-6094 and will assist the program leaders in planning and preparation.

For avid birders, ‘Birding with Ranger Blake,’ is scheduled for Jan. 29 at 10 a.m. Join Ranger Blake Lewis on a birding hike focusing on migratory birds. Many songbirds, water birds and raptors overwinter here and may be sighted in addition to year-round species such as woodpeckers and red-shouldered hawks. Both beginners and avid birders will learn tips and information on where to bird and enjoy intriguing tales from his many years of observing birds, reptiles and other wildlife. Visitors will meet at the Ranger Station and park in the area below it near the campground entrance gate. Registration is required and may be completed at the Ranger Station by calling 863-386-6094. A new walk, ‘Hiking the Hammock: Primitive Wilderness Scrub Walk,’ will begin in February.

Wallks are approximately one hour. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Visitors are advised to dress for the weather and wear hiking shoes, long pants and protective clothing. Bring water, sunscreen, insect repellent, walking sticks, snacks and binoculars. Park entry fees of $6.00 per vehicle (up to 8 persons), $4.00 per single occupant vehicle, and $2.00 for bicyclists and pedestrians apply. Highlands Hammock is located at 5931 Hammock Road in Sebring.
