OKEECHOBEE- The Okeechobee High School Brahman varsity football team is enjoying their bye week before they take the field again on Sept. 28 to face the Fort Pierce Westwood Panthers.
The Brahmans have a 3-1 record headed into their bye week, which is their best start in years. They opened he season with a 49-0 blowout against the DeSoto County Bulldogs. The Okeechobee defense completely shutdown the DeSoto offense, forcing multiple three and outs throughout the game. OHS senior Andre Santiago had a big sack in the first quarter that forced the Bulldogs into a fourth and long. Santiago is currently one of the sack leaders in the state with 8 sacks in four games.
Okeechobee followed that win up with a 44-0 win over the St Edward’s Pirates. Senior quarterback Ni’marion Bryant had a 5-touchdown day against the Pirates. Bryant had 196 yards rushing on nine carries. Senior Carriss Johns had 128 yards on the ground in 10 carries.
Then the Brahmans defeated Ambassador Christian Academy 48-0 in wet, rain-soaked game at OHS. The Okeechobee defense secured another shutout, thanks to a last second interception by Santana Alvarez that kept Ambassador out of the endzone. Bryant and Christon Requeina combined for four touchdowns in the win.
On Sept. 15, Okeechobee fell 34-6 to the South Fork Bulldogs in their first loss of the season. Bryant had another rushing touchdown, while sophomore Matthew May had three solo tackles, five assisted tackles, and a interception. Both defenses were in control in the first half of the game. South Fork was able to turn a great punt return and a turnover near the Brahman goaline into 14 points in the second quarter.
The Brahmans threatened to score in the final seconds of the first half, with Bryant escaping the Bulldog defense and running for a couple big first downs. Okeechobee advanced to the South Fork goaline, but time expired before they could punch it in for a touchdown.
Okeechobee’s first game back after the bye will be a tough district matchup. The Brahmans will be on the road taking on the 3-1 Fort Pierce Westwood Panthers. The Panthers won last year’s game between the two teams, 21-14. And defeated the South Fork Bulldogs earlier this season 18-16.
