Posted

OKEECHOBEE — An Okeechobee man was surprised to find a stuffed gnome and $5,000 in damages to his vehicle when he left a local restaurant.

On Sunday, July 24 around 10 p.m., Officer Savannah Smith of the Okeechobee City Police Department was dispatched to the restaurant regarding a criminal mischief complaint. When she arrived, she spoke with the victim, who told her he found his vehicle keyed and a gnome sitting on his windshield.

According to the arrest report, the man said he had received multiple texts and calls from an ex-girlfriend while he was eating in a local restaurant. The woman, identified as Shelley Makowsky, reportedly told him she was outside the restaurant, but he ignored the calls and messages. He told the officer they had not had a relationship for more than a year, but when she drinks, she becomes obsessive.

Officer Smith was able to obtain video surveillance of the parking lot, and it allegedly showed Makowsky scratch the truck. When she was asked about the damage, Makowsky reportedly told the officer she was just trying to get the man’s attention. She said she left the gnome so he would know she was there.

The damage was estimated at over $5,000.

Makowsky was charged with felony criminal mischief and bond was set at $2,500.
