OKEECHOBEE — James Howling IV was sentenced on March 16 to one year in county jail after pleading no contest to threatening to injure or kill and making a threat of mass destruction.

Howling was arrested in June 2022 after Okeechobee City police officers were dispatched to Charles Composites on Northeast 12th Street regarding a suspicious person complaint.

Officer Savannah Smith and Sgt. Aurelio Almazan were told a man had called the business and made death threats against employees. According to the arrest report, the caller said he was going to kill all the pinkies and shoot everyone. The phone call had been recorded, and the officers noted the caller had some type of speech impairment. Sgt. Almazan identified the voice as belonging to James Howling IV.

When they interviewed Howling, he told them he applied for a job at the company but was turned away due to his hearing issues. He said he was mad at his family at the time the call was made but did not recall making a threatening call to the business. He claimed he lost his phone in the woods while hunting, so the officers were unable to check his phone.
