OKEECHOBEE – March is National Music in Our Schools Month.

At their March 14 meeting, Okeechobee County Commissioners passed a proclamation stating:

“Music education is part of a well-rounded education for every student as outlined in Every Student Succeeds Act.

“The purpose of this celebration is to raise awareness of the lasting positive impact of music education in the academic, personal and professional growth of our students.

“Music education shapes the way our students understand themselves and the world around them, allowing for a deep engagement with learning.

“Music in Our Schools Month reminds us that school is where all children should have access to music.

“Music educators, students and communities throughout Florida demonstrate the importance of quality music education programs to the lives of young people.”

Commissioner Terry Burroughs presented the proclamation to Cheryl Worlow of the Band Boosters of Okeechobee County.

“Music is another language,” said Burroughs. “It’s a wonderful language because music is in everybody’s heart.”

Music education starts in pre-K, said  Worlow.  Okeechobee County currently has five elementary schools but only 1.5 music educators.

Their first instrument is often a recorder. They might also play percussion instruments, she said.

In middle school, students have the opportunity to take band classes. The high school has band classes and the marching band. “In the past marching season, we placed in the top five for the state of Florida in our division,” he said.

She encouraged everyone to check out the OHS band page on Facebook and to attend the free spring concerts by the middle school and high school bands.

“I am so disappointed to hear there are so few music classes available for elementary school, said Commissioner Kelly Owens. That is a result of what comes from the state in terms of funding, she added. “I hope there is a way to bring that to the attention of our legislators and make them understand.”

She said students involved in music often do well in other subject areas. She said she believes this is because of the discipline they learned in music class.
