OHS girls soccer team to host first home game

OKEECHOBEE — The Okeechobee High School Lady Brahman varsity soccer team will be hosting their first home game of the season on Dec. 10 against the Clewiston Lady Tigers.

The Lady Brahmans have opened up their season with three back-to-back wins on the road this season, defeating Sebring, Lake Placid and Clewiston in November.

In their last match against Clewiston, the Lady Brahmans were able to shut down the Lady Tiger offense, winning 5-0.

Okeechobee will have another home game a few days after hosting Clewiston. On Dec. 14, LaBelle will make the trip to the top of the lake to face the Lady Brahmans.

LaBelle will be one of the true early tests for Okeechobee. Last season the team went 15-3-1, advancing to their district semifinals. But Okeechobee has some playoff experience under their belt as well.

Last season, the Lady Brahmans advanced all the way to the regional quarterfinals, in what had been a remarkable turnaround for the program. In 2018-19, the Lady Brahmans had finished with a 2-11 record while in 2019-20 the team improved to an 11-8-1 record.

A lot of key players from that run, like Kaitlyn Guerrero and Isabella Saucedo, are back with the team this year.

New head coach Maria Cisneros took over the reins of the program this year from previous coach Eric Swant. And so far the team hasn’t missed a beat. Currently the Lady Brahmans have the best record in their 5A District 14.

Senior night is scheduled for the last home game of the regular season, when Okeechobee hosts Fort Pierce Westwood on Jan. 27. JV will play at 5:30 p.m. while varsity takes the field at 7 p.m.

Following that game, which will be the last of the regular season, district playoffs will start winding up. Last year the Brahmans advanced to the district championship where they fell to a powerhouse Suncoast team. Suncoast officially starts their season later this week on Dec. 3 and they’ll look to be once again battling Okeechobee all season for the top spot in the district.
