OKEECHOBEE- The Okeechobee High School Lady Brahman varsity volleyball team open the season with a 3-0 shut out over the Lake Placid Lady Dragons on Aug. 23.

Lake Placid looked impressive in the first set, with both teams taking turns claiming the lead. But in the second half of the set, Okeechobee’s communication on the court began to click, and the Lady Brahmans closed out with a 25-18 win. The Lady Brahman seniors Penelope Van Eman and Sydney Matthews played a key role helping the team maintain composure as they stalled Lake Placid’s momentum and then went on a five-point run to take the first set.

The second set was all Okeechobee. The Lady Brahmans were relentless, and completely dominated the game. Lake Placid’s sole bight spot in the second set was winning a long, dramatic back-and-forth volley that saw both teams making diving saves to keep the ball in play. But, other than that, Okeechobee was in complete control for the second set, winning 25-11.

The third set was a straight continuation of Okeechobee’s success in the second. The Lady Dragons made things interesting near the end by rallying to within four points of the Lady Brahmans. But it was too little, too late, and Okeechobee rolled to a 25-16 win to take the third set and win the game.

The Lady Brahmans have six seniors on the varsity squad this season, Van Eman, Matthews, Lexi Thomas, Mamie Mccoy, Jillian Durfee, and Isabelle Veloz.

Last season the Lady Brahmans finished as district runners-up and advanced to the regional semifinal. Jensen Beach was the team to knock out Okeechobee in both the district championship and the regional semifinal.

Jensen is a longtime district rival for Okeechobee and is a powerhouse volleyball program. Last year the team went on the win the state championship, their fifth in the last 19 years.

Jensen and Okeechobee are set to face each other again at OHS in the regular season finale on Oct. 10.
