Okeechobee Fire Report

Okeechobee County Fire Rescue responded to 304 incidents between March 13 and March 27. These included 15 smoke or fire, 24 motor vehicle accidents, seven invalid assists, one aircraft standby, 226 emergency medical assists and 32 miscellaneous calls.

Of 231 possible transports, 50 were refused or used another method of transportation.

Below are a few of the highlights:

  • On March 14, OCFR responded to a call at approximately 12:30 p.m. in the 1800 block of State Road 70 East regarding a fire in a motor vehicle. When they arrived, they found the RV fully engulfed and already burned to the frame. The owner of the company where the RV was located explained they had been using torches to dismantle the RV in order to scrap it. He thought when they left for lunch, something must have “caught back up.” He said the RV was uninsured.
  • On March 17 at approximately 2:30 p.m., OCFR responded to the 4000 block of Southeast 128th Avenue regarding a cultivated grain fire. When they arrived, they found approximately 60 acres on fire. Florida Forest Service was on the scene as well.
  • On March 23 at approximately 3 p.m., OCFR responded to the 5100 block of State Road 710 regarding a vehicle fire. When they arrived, they found a semi-truck with light smoke coming out of the cab. The driver said the fire started in the dashboard on the passenger side.
  • On March 26 at approximately 8:30 p.m., OCFR responded to the 21700 block of Northwest 252nd Street regarding a brush fire. When they arrived, they found an approximately 4.5-acre fire. The Florida Forest Service responded as well.
  • On March 26 at approximately 6:45 p.m., OCFR responded to the 20800 block of Northwest 318th Street regarding a brush fire. When they arrived, they found a 7-acre fire. The Florida Forest Service responded as well.
  • On March 26 at approximately 1:15 p.m., OCFR responded to U.S. 441 North regarding a forest fire. When they arrived, they found a fire in a cow pasture of uncut hay and thick brush. The Florida Forest Service responded as well.
