OKEECHOBEE- The Okeechobee County School Board recently recognized Julio Guerreca for his quick actions in helping save a teacher’s life at Okeechobee High School.

On April 20 Jon Enrico became incapacitated at his desk. Guerreca noticed something was wrong and approached Enrico to ask if he was OK. When Enrico wasn’t able to respond, Julio ran to the main office to alert staff and get help. Julio’s quick actions helped save his teacher from death or a more severe brain injury.

“Becuase of those actions, Jon is alive today,” said Enrico’s wife Clara Enrico. “It was lunch time. There were not many students in the classroom. But he decided to stay in the classroom that day. That has to be because of God.”

Superintendent Ken Kenworthy was emotional in expressing his appreciation for Julio, saying that when Jon needed him the most, Julio was there for him.

Clara also thanked all the staff members at OHS for their support in the ensuing months as her husband recovers.

“We have had the best support ever,” explained Clara. “We couldn’t go through this without all of you. It’s a lot, but I know I can call and they will say ‘I will be right there’. I just really appreciate everything. From principals to custodians, I get phone calls all the time asking if I need food or need someone to clean the house.”
